St Andrews Chorus returns to Caird Hall for its fifth visit to present a programme with the River Tay Sinfonia and tenor and bass soloists of choral masterpieces by composers better known for their operas. Cherubini’s Requiem in C minor was composed for a ceremony organised after Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo to commemorate the deaths of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette; it was one of the most popular choral works of the nineteenth century, performed at Beethoven’s funeral. Puccini’s exuberant Messa di Gloria, meanwhile, includes melodies that he later reworked in the operas Edgar and Manon Lescaut.
