Nethergate, Dundee

Nethergate, Dundee - Ref: WC0491

This Alexander Wilson photograph shows a short section of the south-western part of Dundee's Nethergate, just to the west of St Andrew's catholic church (later cathedral). A. & J. Robertson, the City Carriage Works, were at No. 152.

No. 154 was Benjamin F. Jamieson, the house painter and decorator, specialising in 'sanitary paperhanging'. According to an advertisement in the Dundee Directory, 'skilled workmen [were] sent to all parts of the country'.

Alexander Stewart & Co., carpentry contractors, had works in Sea Wynd. Presumably the Central Steam Joinery above was part of their business. The Wholesale Tea Warehouse is not listed in the Dundee Directory. William Thomson's bedding's were No. 152.5.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
