St Andrew's Established Church, Dundee

St Andrew's Established Church, Dundee - Ref: WC1443

Built by Samuel Bell, St Andrews Church is one of Dundee's few remaining 18th century buildings. The foundation stone was laid on the 4th June, 1772 and the church was completed by 1774.

Jointly erected by the Kirk Session, the Nine Incorporated Trades and the Three United Trades the church is sometimes referred to as the St Andrews Trade Church. When it was built in the 18th century the area was semi-rural. Today, the church is dwarfed by a modern central shopping complex, the Wellgate Centre.(2001)

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
