This photograph shows the north east part of Dundee's Overgate shopping area, with The Royal British Hotel in the High Street visible in the distant east.

The 25th Annual Clearing Sale was at William Smith's Dundee Equitable Boot Depot, No. 29. The basket shop in the foreground at No. 37 belonged to James R. Butchart. Paul Kane, a smallware merchant, is listed at No. 33.

No. 31 housed businesses belonging to Robert Adam, lockmaker, Mrs A. Tarbet, spiritdealer, James Bruce, blacksmith, G. & A. Low, joiners, George McIntosh, basketmakers, and James Alexander & Sons, brassfounders, plumbers & gasfitters.


Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
