Nethergate, Dundee

Nethergate, Dundee - Ref: WC0449

The northern side of Dundee's Nethergate is shown in this photograph, with its junction to Lindsay Street at the extreme right (and east). The photograph can be dated to c.1903 by reference to the businesses shown.

Sinclair & Ewing, the Ironmongery Warehouse at No. 35, are listed in the Dundee Directory as 'plumbers, gas fitters, & tinsmiths', while their advertisement makes special mention of 'wedding presents'.

Edward Wilson & Sons are listed at No. 29 as part of Porteous Brothers and 'cabinetmakers, upholsterers, carpet ware housemen, decorators, removal contractors, house agents and valuators'. Their advertisement also refers to yacht furnishing.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
