Lass o' Gowrie in Dundee Harbour

The "Lass o' Gowrie" was an iron paddle steamer built by J T Eltringham of South Shields in 1883 for David Edwards of Dundee. She was registered there on 9th October of that year, with a gross tonnage of 128 and measuring 106 feet in length.

In 1889, she was sold to Cosens and Co., Ltd., of Weymouth, and struck from the Dundee Register. She is seen here in the King William IV Dock at Dundee Harbour.

Beyond are the imposing buildings of Dundee's Greenmarket and Dock Street, with the spire of St Paul's Cathedral dominating the skyline. None of the other vessels in the harbour at this time have been identified.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
