High Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0303
This celebrated photograph shows an advertisement for performances in Dundee by the escapologist Houdini, posted on the building known as Monk's House. No precise information has come to light about the events.
The white building to the right of the photograph belongs to the hatter, hosier and shirt maker, William Wallace, who styles himself 'successor to Alex. Tulloch', the company long housed at No. 50 High Street.
The advertisement in Patterson's boots stores says that their remaining stock has been removed to 89 Overgate to the Civil Service Boot Stores for sale. Patterson's are not listed in the Dundee Directory for 1910-11.
Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
