High Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0291
The focal point of this image is the elegant "Whitehall House", home of John B. Hurrie's drapery business, which also had shops at No. 32 Reform Street and No. 69 Commercial Street.
To its right is Whitehall Street, and to the left Nethergate. High Street begins where the building style changes. [J K M] Hardie, at No. 6 Whitehall Street was a hairdresser.
At No. 8 was John McKay the butcher, while No. 12 housed the china shop of William McBurney. Whitehall Street must have been rather a musical area, since Nos. 1, 4 and 10 housed five teachers (including the Stoole brothers and W P Fleming) between them.
Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
