Hawkhill, Dundee

Hawkhill, Dundee - Ref: WC0192

This view of the east end of the Hawkhill in Dundee shows part of the West Port, with Thomas Aitken's public house, The Globe, while No. 51 the ironmongery, listed in Dundee Directory as millfurnisher.

The tenement buildings up the hill were demolished during the Dundee University developments in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The West Port Loans Office is probably the brokers listed in the Dundee Directory as John Mathieson, broker, at No. 1 Hawkhill.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
