High Street, Dundee

High Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0290

The are directly opposite the Town House is shown in this image, reading from the west at the left to the east, where High Street crosses Commercial Street and leads into the Murraygate.

Strangely John Craig at No. 74 High Street is listed in several issues of the Dundee Directory as 'late hosier' at No. 71, but the adjective is dropped in the 1897-98 volume, where the address is given as No. 75!

'The Garden', a vegetarian restaurant owned by Leo McCaughey, is listed in three issues of the Dundee Directory (from 1897-1900). Thereafter, both the name and that of the proprietor disappear.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
