Overgate, Dundee

Overgate, Dundee - Ref: WC0513

This photograph of Dundee's Overgate reads west to east from left to right. The street visible to the left of centre is Barrack Street. William Reid is the grocer at No. 57, with William Crawford, the bootmaker, at No. 53.

No. 47 was Mrs Dobson, a 'fancy goods merchant, basketmaker, (cooper). There's a rocking horse in her display. Mary Stewart, next door at No. 45, was a fruiterer. James Gray, the 'practical watch and clock maker' was at No. 43.

David McLeod, The Standard Boot and Shoe Store, is listed in the Dundee Directory at No. 41. There is no listing at all for William Gellatly, a chimney sweeper and soot merchant in any directory.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
