Victoria Diamond Jubilee decorations, Dundee - Ref: WC1696

Photograph from Andrew Wilson Photographic Collection. View of buildings in Meadowside from near the top of Reform Street.

Ex Baillie Moncur gave a dinner to about 1300 poor of the town in the Volunteer Drill Hall. They were served by about 250 workers. Messrs Lamb provided the dinner of beefsteak pies, potatoes and Jubilee pudding.

300 respectably honest but poor received gifts of tea, sugar and beef. Everyone on the Poor Roll (adults and children) received a gift of 1 shilling. The costs of nearly all the functions for the poor and children were borne by private individuals.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
