Victoria Diamond Jubilee decorations, Dundee - Ref: WC1695

Photograph from Andrew Wilson Photographic Collection. View of what is now TSB building in Meadowside with ornate railings enclosing the gardens and buildings in Albert Square.

Provost Ballingall provided (and paid) for a cake and wine banquet in the Picture Gallery for everyone in the procession (250) as the majority of the Town Council declined to allow any public funds to be expended on refreshments

In Barrack Square 2500 poor children were given dinner, the invitations being distributed by Mission Workers of the Children's Free Breakfast. The dinner started with a hymn and then an address by Provost Ballingall. The meal was hot meat pies, cakes and lemonade. A packet of sweets was handed to each child.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
