Roseangle No 46

46 Roseangle - Ref: WC0350

The three men pictured may be wearing railway uniforms are probably footplate staff. The left most appears to be a fireman, and the other two are drivers. This is the track entrance to the former Caledonian Railway engine shed on the south side of Roseangle, opposite Seafield Road, which you can just see between the tree and the white house on the left of the photograph. The white house is no longer there - the area it occupied is now overgrown.

The engine shed was taken over by the LMS in 1923, and then by British Railways in 1948, and became Dundee Diesel Depot after the demise of the steam engine in 1967.

In its last years the shed remained under the watchful eye of the late Councillor Charles Bowman, in his capacity as Train Crew Manager. The photographer has taken the photograph with the shed to his back.

The children appear barefoot again, which is in stark contrast to the affluence of the Roseangle area.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
