Nethergate, Dundee

Nethergate, Dundee - Ref: WC0413

The south side of Dundee's Nethergate and High Street are shown in this photograph, taken from Melville House, outside the Dundee Arms. The clock tower of the Town House serves as a point of reference.

James S. Kerr's boot shop is at No. 2 Nethergate and forms part of a small chain belonging to the Kerr family. An article (with photographs) in the Piper O' Dundee of 22nd December 1897 gives background information on their various shops and achievements.

Another prominent Dundee company is Laird & Sinclair, the nurserymen and seedsmen. The company was founded in 1833, and W. P. Laird played an active role in various Horticultural and Agricultural Societies, and was with the Fife and Forfar Light Horse.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
