Nethergate, Dundee

Nethergate, Dundee - Ref: WC0442

Alexander Wilson's photograph of the eastern part Dundee's Nethergate shows the fence and trees in front of the City Churches to the north and left. Russell's Royal Hotel 'patronised by the Royal family' was at No. 54 Nethergate and No. 15 Union Street.

Their advertisement in the 1907-08 Dundee Directory claims it to have 'the finest ballroom in the north of Scotland'. Below, at No. 56 was Charles Kerr's chemist's shop. No. 62 was J. M. Connell & Son, bootmakers, who lived at Hill Terrace, Wormit.

Above, listed at No. 64, were the clothiers, Christie Bros.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
