This photograph shows the south side of Dundee's Nethergate from the top of Union Street at the left hand side running westwards.

By 1909, The Royal Hotel is listed in the Dundee Directory as a limited company, managed by H. A. Powell. Their advertisement claims it is the finest hotel in the city, with electric lighting throughout and an Oti's [sic] elevator to the various floors.

No. 68 housed the 'expert manufacturing furrier' Arthur A. Miller, No. 70 The Remington Typewriter Co., No. 72 Peter W. Mackie, No. 76 Alfred Souter the watchmaker and No. 78 Miss Mary Souter, milliner, specialising in 'wedding trousseaux'.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
