This photograph by Alexander Wilson focuses on the junction of Nethergate, Dundee, with Tally Street, running north beside the City Churches towards the Overgate at the left hand side. Nethergate merges with High Street at the lamp post.

Ferrier's Photographic Studios are listed in the Dundee Directory as No. 1 Tally Street, while A. Louis Reis & Co., watch makers [and importers], directly below are No. 19 Nethergate. The Chocolate Warehouse at No. 17 is not listed in any directory.

Jane Austen, a qualified refractionist (a type of optician) worked at No. 15 and lived at No. 1 St Johnswood Terrace. John Thomson (without any more information) is listed at No. 11, and Melville House (the drapery) as No. 9.


Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
