Morgan Academy, Dundee

Morgan Academy, Dundee - Ref: WC1476

This impressive looking building was founded by John Morgan. Originally called Morgan Hospital, it was intended to educate sons of the working class. The School Board acquired the building in 1889 and it became Morgan Academy.

An extension was built in 1992. Morgan Academy suffered a devastating fire on the 21st March, 2001.The central tower has all but disappeared. Hopes are high that the frontage can be rebuild with a modern school built at the back.(2001)

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
