Morgan Academy, Dundee

Morgan Academy, Dundee - Ref: WC1479

The impressive looking Morgan Hospital was founded by John Morgan. Its aim was to be Dundee's version of Edinburgh's George Heriot's Hospital. The School Board acquired Morgan Hospital in 1889 and the name was changed to Morgan Academy.

On March 21st, 2001 Morgan Academy suffered a catastrophic fire. Salvage work is currently underway with the intention of rebuilding the frontage. A modern school will be built behind this. Morgan pupils are using Rockwell School until the Morgan is rebuilt. (2001)

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
