Mid Kirk Style, Dundee

Mid Kirk Style, Dundee - Ref: WC0384

This photograph shows the tenement blocks in Dundee's Mid Kirk Style, a street which ran east to west parallel with the Overgate from Tally Street out of the righthand side to Lindsay Street, which can be seen at the extreme left.

The area in front of the wall is part of the grounds of the City Churches, which stand on the city's Nethergate. The only identifiable business is H. Carruther's furniture room, which is listed as No. 70 Overgate, managed by Mrs George Carruthers, who lived at No. 7 Ward Road. Her maiden name was Jessie Alexander, and she married George Carruthers in 1870.

Also listed at this address is William Carruthers, the hairdresser whose salon was at No. 12 Tally Street. William, born in 1872, was the son of Jessie and George Carruthers, and worked in the hairdressing business from the age of 18.

(Information on the Carruthers family kindly supplied by Lorraine Kennedy.)

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
