Magdalen Yard Road, Dundee

Magdalen Yard Road, Dundee - Ref: WC0347

This photograph shows the section of Magdalen Yard Road to the east of Bellefield Avenue, with Magdalen Green in the foreground.

The building set back from the road is "The Vine", which stood in grounds adjacent to Bellfield House [sic], which is listed in later issues of the Dundee Directory as belonging to Miss Barrie.

David M Walker's 'Architects and architecture in Dundee 1770-1814' says the 'strange Egypto-Greek "Vine" [was] built in 1836 for George Duncan, a private art gallery with a few rooms contrived in it for the owner. The architect is unknown'.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
