Lindsay Street, Dundee

Lindsay Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0340

This photograph shows the corner of Lindsay Street at its southern end with Nethergate, leading away to the west.

From right to left, the buildings in Lindsay Street are the School Wynd United Free Church, [Alexander] Birnie, the photographic dealer, and Dr Stewart the dentist.

John Stewart's speciality seems to have been extraction of decayed teeth and the manufacture of false teeth. He also had an extensive collection of quality paintings (including van Dyke), some of which were donated to the city collection.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
