High Street, Dundee

High Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0282

Taken from the east end of the Overgate, this photograph focuses on the south east end of High Street, and dates from before 1899, when the Royal Bank of Scotland's new building was opened.

The Dundee Directory for 1888-89 lists the buildings as they appear, although the numbering is slightly deceptive: J and J Peat the clothiers were at No. 52, the sheriff-officer James Bisset is at No. 51, but John Durham and Son the stationers were at No. 49.

At the opposite side of the street Alexander Stewart the tailor is at No. 2, and J. Robertson and Co. are listed as restaurateurs at the Globe at No. 4.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
