High Street, Dundee

High Street, Dundee (west side) - Ref: WC0268

This is perhaps the most celebrated photograph of this section of the northern side of Dundee's High Street, with the Houdini promotional posters.

It dates from some time after June 1909, when the escapologist visited the city - the exact dates are unclear, but local press reports suggest some time between the 19th and 26th of that month.

Mrs G. T. Ross at No. 42 was a wines and spirits dealer. Andrew Powrie at No. 39 was a tailor, and shared the building with Dundee Photographic Association and the home of Mrs Alexander Easton.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
