High Street, Dundee

High Street, Dundee (west side) - Ref: WC0274

The tramlines in this photograph lead from Nethergate to the left, and sweep round to the right into Reform Street, with the Overgate leading westwards in the middle distance.

On the opposite corner from Strathtay House is H & W Tulloch the hatters and men's mercers (textile dealers). Also just visible at No. 6 Reform Street is the shop belonging to India rubber goods manufacturer William Davidson.

His other shop was at No. 51 High Street. Advertisements in the Dundee Directory for 1906-07 list a wide diversity of produce from 'Surgical and hospital requisites' to tyres for motor cars and tubes for cycles, as well as waterproof cart covers.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
