High Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0314

This image focuses on the Dundee's Town House, with the spire of St Paul's Episcopal Church at the left (and east).

William Doig, the chemist at No. 9, was born in Kirriemuir, and had strong connections with the Methodist church in Dundee, and became involved in many public movements and institutions, including a period as Convener of Finance of the Schools Board.

He inaugurated the provision of dinners for poor children attending school. He entered the Town Council in 1882 and in the run up to 1891 elections 'as was expected, has been left in undisputed possession of the field' (the sixth ward, i.e. city centre).

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
