Hansom Cabs in Eagle Inn Close

Hansom Cabs in Eagle Inn Close - Ref: WC1015

These two-wheeled carriages were called Hansom cabs after the designer, Joseph Hansom. The driver sat at the rear, above the compartment for the passengers (who could thus see where they were going).

Alexander Wilson performed an invaluable service to historians by devoting his time to taking photographs of the forms of transport which were popular in his own time. Hansom cabs were particularly popular in Dundee.

According to the 1891 and 1901 Census returns, Eagle Inn Close was situated at 144 Murraygate.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
