Greenmarket, Dundee - Ref: WC1086

Alexander Wilson's photograph of the Greenmarket hows a carnival in full flow. The large open space near Dock Street and Yeaman Shore was used for different kinds of markets, and served as a social focus for the working classes at weekends.

The Public Weigh House and salt stores belonging to James Cowan jun., one of several members of that family who worked in the salt industry, is at the left hand side.

The Dundee, Perth and London Shipping Company had its offices at No. 5 Shore Terrace. The carnival features the Great Baker's Troupe, but unfortunately no information is available about them.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
