Excelsior and Commodore in Dundee Harbour

"Excelsior" and "Commodore" in Dundee Harbour - Ref: WC0821

The "Excelsior" was an iron paddle steamer, built in London in 1866. According to Lloyds Reigsterm, she was owned from 1887-92 by F. Warren of North Shields. With a gross tonnage of 105 and measuring 90.5 feet in length she was used as a tug.

The "Commodore" was an iron paddle steamer, built by J. T. Eltringham of South Shields in 1875. Originally called "Flying Meteor", she was re-named "Gladstone" in 1887 (when owned by J. McKean of Leith).

When she was acquired by F. Warren of North Shields (and registered at Dundee) in 1890, she was re-named "Commodore". With a gross tonnage of 158 and an overall length of 118 feet, she too was used as a tug.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
