Dundee in Dundee Docks

"Dundee" in Dundee Docks - Ref: WC0810

A single-screw steamer, the "Dundee" was built in 1885 by Gourlay Bros. And Co., Ltd., of Dundee for the Dundee, Perth and London Shipping Company for their Dundee to London service.

She had a gross tonnage of 1305 and was 270 feet long. She was involved in a collision with the S. S. "Thames" in 1909, ran ashore and, taking on quantities of water, capsized. She was salvaged but broken up at Felixtowe.

The "Dundee" is seen in the Dundee, Perth and London Shipping Company's berth in the city's Victoria Dock. The company had regular sailing schedule, which was advertised in the local newspapers almost every day.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
