Decorations in Nethergate, Dundee

Decorations in Nethergate, Dundee - Ref: WC1795

This photograph shows part of the Nethergate decorated in celebration of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee of June 1897. Dundee, as elsewhere, celebrated royal events with great enthusiasm.

In Dundee celebrations included a tree planting ceremony in Dudhope Park, a banquet held in the Albert Hall, fireworks and parades. In the photograph flags, including the American Stars and Stripes, can be seen decorating the corner building.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
