Decorations in Nethergate, Opposite Tally Street, Dundee - Ref: WC1783
It is possible these decorations were put up to celebrate the coronation of Edward VII which took place on 9th August, 1902. Dundee, as elsewhere, celebrated any royal event with great enthusiasm, holding parades and banquets as well as decorating buildings.
Tally Street, the street sign can be seen on the left above the premises of Reis, sellers of fancy goods, is no longer there. The recently modernised Overgate Shopping Centre now stands on the site.
Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
