Dundee West Railway Station - Ref: WC1044
This photograph shows Dundee West Station and the south end of South Union Street. The building was the third at that location, and was opened in 1889. The Italianate structure was made of red sandstone, and closed in 1965.
At the centre is Wordie and Co.'s offices. They are listed in the Dundee Directory as carting agents for the Caledonian and the Dundee and Arbroath Railways, with public warehouses. The manager in 1901 was H.F. Pollock.
To the right of the elegant clock tower the south end of Union Street (which leads north to Nethergate and the City Churches) can be made out, as well as the rounded west end of Mather's Commercial Hotel in Whitehall Crescent.
Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
