Leisure & Culture Dundee has welcomed new investment that will help secure the future of Broughty Castle Museum for the next three years. Match funding from Dundee City Council and the Northwood Charitable Trust will ensure the continued operation of the historic site and protect public access to Broughty Ferry's most iconic landmark.
A total of 150,000 of joint investment has been committed over a threeyear period, with Dundee City Council also continuing to fund essential maintenance costs associated at the Castle.
The investment will support exhibitions and maintain the museum's seasonal programme of events and activities from April to October. The announcement follows months of collaboration between Leisure & Culture Dundee, funders and partners to strengthen the longterm future of the visitor attraction.
Councillor Mark Flynn, Leader of Dundee City Council and Blair Thomson of the Northwood Charitable Trust visited Anna Day, Head of Culture and Libraries for Leisure & Culture Dundee at Broughty Castle Museum today to mark the announcement.
Anna Day, Head of Culture and Libraries at Leisure & Culture Dundee, said
"This funding is essential for the castle's ongoing development and will help us plan with certainty. We are grateful to Dundee City Council and the Northwood Charitable Trust for their commitment to safeguarding this important site."
Councillor Mark Flynn, Leader of Dundee City Council, said
"This investment means residents, local families and visitors will be able to continue enjoying the museum's stories, exhibitions and views for the coming years, while discussions to secure the long-term future of the Castle continue."
Blair Thomson of the Northwood Charitable Trust said
This partnership provides the certainty needed for partners and supporters to plan confidently for the years ahead and continue delivering real value for the community. We're pleased to support an agreement that secures the Castle's future and strengthens its role as a cultural anchor for Broughty Ferry."
Historic Environment Scotland, which cares for the fabric of the castle, also welcomed the announcement.
Liz Grant, Regional Visitor and Community Manager at Historic Environment Scotland (HES) said
"We are pleased that a viable solution has been found to enable the museum to continue to operate from the castle providing an opportunity for many more visitors to experience the rich tapestry of this part of Dundee's story."
Leisure & Culture Dundee continues to work closely with Broughty Ferry Traders, who have played an important role in supporting activities and local fundraising efforts. They have set up an independent 'Friends of Broughty Ferry Castle' group, which will enable further fundraising and potential access to funds which are not available to larger organisations.
Highlights from the 2025 season included the approval of a new sauna in the castle grounds, creating a distinctive wellbeing experience to the historic site. The Castle also hosted a new programme of markets across July, August and October 2025, with the success of these events leading to further dates already booked for 2026. In addition, the 2025 season featured a major cultural milestone as the Castle helped mark the 200th anniversary of James Guthrie Orchar, celebrating one of Dundee's most important artistic legacies.
In 2025, the Castle had 28,748 visitors, a strong figure compared to 28,900 in 2024/25, even with a reduced weekly opening schedule.
Broughty Ferry Castle Museum plays a vital role in sharing the maritime, military and social history of the area. Standing at the mouth of the River Tay, the 15th century fortress has watched over the coastline since 1496. Today the museum offers engaging displays on local history, wildlife and art along with magnificent views across the river and an exciting programme of seasonal events.
Broughty Castle Museum is free to visit and will open for the 2026 season on April 1, offering a warm welcome to residents and visitors alike. To find out more visit www.leisureandculturedundee.com/broughty-castle or follow on Facebook and Instagram @broughtycastle
