Launch of the STEAM Hub at Dundee Central Library

Launch of the STEAM Hub at Dundee Central Library

Today (Friday 12 May), 2023), saw the official launch of the STEAM Hub at Dundee Central Library. STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) provides a cross-discipline approach to learning using creative processes that require imagination and innovation. The Steam Hub has been created in Central Library, Dundee to bring these subjects together in one space. Incorporating MAC (Makerspace at Central), the space will promote STEAM and Design activities including 3D Printing, Craft, Sewing and Coding.

A recent addition to the Steam Hub is the Making Room - a civic space for the city, conceived by Assemble, V&A Dundee’s designers in residence. They worked with a group of young people from Dundee over several months, blending digital and traditional techniques of production. Making Room acts as a living library of Dundee’s built heritage and current environment, inviting us all to take note and to look out for moments of beauty in our everyday surroundings. It is appropriately surrounded by a rich collection of books and manuals on Architecture, Art, Craft and Design. The space can be booked for events and activities.

Dundee Libraries approach has been inspired by the Scottish Library and Information Council's (SLIC) strategic document, Ambition and Opportunity. This emphasises making the best use of digital technologies to deliver high quality, efficient and responsive services, enabling access to information and services wherever citizens want them. As well as promoting the role of public libraries as cultural centres through books and literature, music, film, and theatre, and encouraging creativity.

Judy Dobbie, Managing Director of Leisure & Culture Dundee said

"The STEAM Hub is a space where our community can come together to explore new ideas and connect with each other through the power of STEAM. Dundee Libraries continues to develop partnerships both inside and outside of Dundee and draws on skills and experience provided by the voluntary sector. The STEAM Hub will showcase emerging library technologies, such as laser scanning and virtual reality, and empower staff, volunteers and public alike."
