Staying active during pregnancy can offer numerous advantages for both mother and baby. Leisure & Culture Dundee have recently added a programme of antenatal yoga and swimming to our offer to help support healthy and enjoyable pregnancy journeys for expectant mothers across Dundee and beyond.
Here’s are just some of the ways these particular activities can be beneficial to those who are in their second trimester and beyond.
Yoga for Pregnancy (Fridays, 6.00-6.45pm at Olympia)
1. Enhanced Flexibility and Strength
Yoga helps to gently stretch and strengthen muscles, which can be particularly beneficial as your body changes and adapts to accommodate your growing baby.
2. Improved Posture and Balance
As your center of gravity shifts, maintaining good posture becomes crucial. Yoga helps improve balance and posture, reducing the strain on your back and joints.
3. Stress Reduction and Relaxation
The mindfulness and breathing techniques practiced in yoga can significantly reduce stress levels, promoting relaxation and emotional well-being.
4. Better Sleep
Regular yoga practice can help improve sleep quality by calming the mind and reducing physical discomfort – both common issues during pregnancy.
5. Preparation for Labour
Pregnancy yoga strengthens the pelvic muscles and increases endurance, which can be beneficial during labour and delivery. The breathing techniques learned can also assist in managing labour pains.
Swimming for Pregnancy (Tuesdays, 18.30-19.30 at Olympia)
1. Provides Low-Impact Exercise
Swimming provides an excellent cardiovascular workout without putting stress on your joints, making it an ideal exercise during pregnancy.
2. Relief from Pregnancy-Related Discomforts
The buoyancy of water supports your body, alleviating pressure on the back and legs. This can help reduce swelling and ease discomfort associated with pregnancy.
3. Improved Circulation
Swimming promotes better blood circulation, reducing the risk of swelling and varicose veins and ensuring that your baby receives a healthy supply of oxygen and nutrients.
4. Maintained Fitness Levels
Regular swimming helps maintain overall fitness and muscle mass, which can make pregnancy more comfortable and prepare your body for childbirth.
5. Mental Wellbeing
The rhythmic nature of swimming and the relaxing environment of the pool can help reduce anxiety and promote a sense of well-being.
