Greenwave - Supporting Citizen Science & Tackling Misinformation

Supporting Citizen Science & Tackling Misinformation

Greenwave is a community-led environmental project based in Dundee, delivered by Leisure and Culture Dundee and supported by the Scottish Government Public Library Improvement Fund.

We help people connect with nature, build practical skills, and feel confident understanding environmental information. Through libraries, partnerships, and hands-on experiences, Greenwave makes it easy for anyone to explore local biodiversity and take part in citizen science.

About the Project

Greenwave was created to tackle two key challenges:

  • Limited access to local biodiversity information
  • Growing misinformation around environmental issues

By offering trusted resources, practical learning, and real-world experience, we support people to understand environmental data and take informed action. Libraries are central to this, providing welcoming spaces to explore, learn, and engage.

Citizen Science

Citizen science involves people contributing to research by observing and recording nature. This can include:

  • Birdwatching and species recording
  • Monitoring plants and insects
  • Taking part in surveys like pond dipping

It plays a vital role in conservation and climate action while helping people build a direct connection with their environment. At Greenwave, it’s open, inclusive, and accessible to all.

What We Offer

  • Library resource hub – Our collection of books and materials for all levels are housed at Arthurstone Library, 5 Arthurstone Terrace, Dundee, DD4 6RT.
  • Equipment loans – tools such as binoculars, microscopes, and survey kits are currently available to community groups, with a long-term goal of being available to private individuals.
  • Workshops and events – hands-on activities, talks, and training sessions organised throughout the year.
  • Community partnerships – working with local groups to expand access and opportunities across the city.

Our Aims

  • Tackle misinformation through hands-on learning
  • Make environmental education accessible to everyone
  • Support biodiversity recording and conservation
  • Promote wellbeing through time in nature
  • Build skills in environmental literacy, data, and critical thinking

Why It Matters

Dundee has rich green spaces, but access to resources and knowledge can be limited. At the same time, environmental issues can feel overwhelming or unclear.

Greenwave helps by making nature more accessible, supporting informed decision-making, and encouraging active participation in caring for local environments.

Get Involved

Greenwave is open to everyone—no experience needed. You can:
