More about Move More Dundee
The Move More Dundee Programme is a free 12 session exercise referral programme supported by; Macmillan, Leisure and Culture Dundee, NHS Tayside, ISE and Paths for all, for people living with and beyond cancer (PLWC). The programme consists of four strands; Circuit class based activities, Short introductory cancer walks, Gentle Movement Classes and Gardening Classes.
There are currently 2.5 million people in the UK living with or beyond cancer and is predicted to rise to 4 million by 2030. The current research and statistics are showing though that while more people are at a risk of cancer, people are living longer with the condition.
All the current evidence shows that physical activity does no harm to people living with or beyond cancer and in fact; reduces the side affects of treatment, reduces the risk of gaining other co-morbidities, slows the disease progression and can delay mortality.
The evidence also states that even small amounts of activity are beneficial to people who aren’t currently active and in fact just reducing sedentary behaviour is positive i.e. standing instead of sitting or walk to the shops rather than take the car etc.
These are volunteer led. All the volunteers have ‘walk leader’, ‘cancer awareness’ and other various Macmillan training. All the walks are introductory walks that work at the level of the slowest participant. All the walks allow you to bring along a friend to join the walks.
Current Walks
Roseangle Arts Cafe - Monday's at 11:30am
Maggies Centre - Wednesday's at 1:00pm
These classes will be based in outdoor ‘green spaces’ and a fun opportunity for participants to come along and get some fresh air and meet others while tending to the community garden. Participants can bring along a friend to these classes. (volunteer led, by fully trained volunteers).
Current Classes
Will begin in the summer.
Gentle Movement is a specially adapted form of activity, designed by Macmillan Cancer Support, to help people living with and beyond cancer to 'Move More and feel better'.
The classes are based on adapted Thai Chi, seated exercises and flexibility activities, as a more mild form of activity for participants who may not have been active before or are looking for a bridge into a more active lifestyle. (volunteer led, by fully trained volunteers)
Current Classes
Will begin in the summer and will be based in libraries and community located around the various areas of Dundee.
These classes are led by Level 4 Cancer Rehabilitation fitness instructors, who fully monitor the participants, who are performing tailored exercises based on information provided by health professionals.
They use a variety of simple exercises that are done in a circuit that is adapted to suit your level of ability and fitness. The instructors are always on hand to offer guidance and support. These are a great way of getting back to fitness and helping you to recover after treatment for cancer.
The circuits are based in Leisure and Culture facilities, based all over Dundee as well as a class delivered in the Institute of Sport and Exercise facility.
Current Classes
Olympia - Tuesday at 3.30 till 4.30
Douglas Sports Centre - Thursday at 11am till 12pm
Dundee University - Friday at 11am till 12pm
There are lots of the health care professionals in Dundee that are advocates of the programme and the programme is solely referral only at the moment.
We have created a referral form for health professionals to send to the Macmillan Development Officer or the Move More Coordinator in order to get participants onto the programme as soon as possible (all contact details are on the form). There are NHS Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS), Oncologists and physios in all the various cancers fields at Ninewells, Kings Cross and Roxburgh House who have referral forms. For those who would like to participate on the programme through their GP, I can give them a referral form that they can take to their GP. I am currently contacting all the Health Centres in Dundee to give information of this programme so there is awareness for all health professionals of Move More Dundee.
