Dundee Sports Awards - previous winner profile
Neil Ferrier won the school volunteer of the year award at the 22/23 Dundee Sports Awards held at the Apex Hotel in May 2023.
Since winning this award, Neil's efforts and commitment to volunteering has been recognised nationally. Neil was awarded the School Sport Volunteer of The Year Award at the Sportscotland Coaching, Officiating and Volunteering Awards in November 2023.
Neil has also now successfully gained employment with Leisure & Culture Dundee as a full-time Active Schools Assistant in the Harris Academy Cluster.
In his role, Neil works with four different primary schools to develop inclusive sporting opportunities for children. He leads breakfast, lunch and after-school clubs, and he also works with pupils with additional support needs and small targeted nurture groups working on various skills and qualities such as turn-taking, confidence and resilience.
Hardworking Neil volunteered in the Harris Academy cluster schools between January 2022 and August 2023 and, over this time, completed over 800 hours of volunteering.
Neil's volunteering ensured children and young people in schools in the Harris Academy cluster were able to take part in a range of sporting opportunities including athletics, basketball, football, and futsal. Neil's dedication and commitment to volunteering and going above and beyond to create opportunities for children and young people made him a deserving winner of the school volunteer of the year award.
Reflecting on winning the 22/23 School Sport Volunteer of the Year Award at the Dundee Sports Awards Neil says
"It was a huge honour even to be nominated for the award nevermind win it. Winning the award was a massive confidence boost for me to receive recognition for the volunteering that I was doing. This award enabled me to progress and pursue the career that I am fortunate to be doing now with Active Schools, as an Active Schools Assistant."
