Mrs Harris Goes To Paris

Based on Paul Gallico's beloved 1958 novel, Anthony Fabian's film follows Ada Harris (Lesley Manville), a widowed cleaning lady who falls in love with a Dior couture dress, and decides to travel to Paris to purchase one of her own. After taking on extra work, scrimping and saving, she gets her first passport and heads to Paris. Ada is met with reserve at the famous fashion house but ends up winning over even the formidable directrice, Claudine Colbert (Isabelle Huppert).

Like its central character, Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris is plucky and cheerful, but has hidden depths. The film questions value and how we percieve it, by suggesting that having and fulfilling a dream is as, or more, valuable than possessing the object of desire.

Fashion-wise, you are in for a treat. It's not a spoiler to say that the famous New Look bar suit of 1947 has a star turn, as do many sumptuous evening looks. The film's costume designer is the Oscar-winning Jenny Beavan, who is responsible for the looks in A Room With a View and more recently Cruella. Beavan was able to visit Dior's archives in Paris, and the house, which cooperated on the film, even lending some replicas they had.

Mrs Harris Goes to Paris is a reminder that clothes have the power to make you dream. Through determination, positivity, and solid friendships, Mrs. 'Arris is going places, and she's taking us along with her.
