Relaxed: The Kid Who Would Be King
The familiar and oft-told Arthurian legend is given a fresh new spin in this latest version by writer/director Joe Cornish (Attack The Block, Ant-Man, The Adventures of Tintin). Bringing a modern sensibility to ancient legends, whilst adding a dash of very streetwise humour, makes for a thrilling family adventure mixing the completely fantastical with the utterly familiar.
Alex Elliot is a typical twelve-year-old facing the challenges of surviving at school. Friendships, bullying, teachers ' the usual stuff. But what he is not ready for is the huge life changes brought on when he comes across a giant sword embedded in a block of concrete on a local building site. Removing the sword from the stone and taking it with him, he later discovers that it is Excalibur, the mythical sword of King Arthur. But it soon equally becomes clear that dark forces, led by the evil sorceress Morgana, also have designs on the sword and the immense power it offers and will stop at nothing to get their hands on it...
With Sir Patrick Stewart as an ageing Merlin, Rebecca Ferguson as the shape-shifting Morgana and Louis Ashbourne Serkis (son of Andy, of Gollum fame) as the would-be king, the film promises an epic tale of ancient battles and mighty combat... in school uniform.
