We are delighted to welcome you back to Mills Observatory.

What can you expect?

Regular visitors will notice a few differences – but our warm welcome will remain the same!

Restrictions have eased significantly but we have instituted the following measures to protect both our staff and our visitors:

  • We have enhanced our regular cleaning regimes
  • We ask that all remain vigilant of their hand and cough hygiene. Sanitiser and hand washing facilities will be available. Staff will be wearing face coverings. We ask that visitors follow the Scottish Government guidelines and wear face coverings during their visit. Please let us know if you are exempt.
  • Please be aware that this is a changing situation. We will post updates, please check web, social media and local press for up to date information.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, Mills Observatory is ready to reopen. We have carried out risk assessments, tested our building systems, installed new signage, sanitiser stations and Perspex screens. We have implemented new cleaning and hygiene regimes and delivered training to all our staff.

We look forward to welcoming you back.

Prior to welcoming visitors back, our staff have been involved in cleaning throughout Mills Observatory.

We had rigorous daily cleaning regimes in place prior to lockdown. We have enhanced these further.

We have new signage in place to remind all of us to maintain a respectful distance from others.

The capacity of the Planetarium Room has been reduced to 12 visitors to allow adequate distance. Entry to this room will be monitored by staff.

The capacity of the Dome has been reduced to 6 visitors to allow adequate distance. Entry to this room will be monitored by staff.

We advise all to follow current guidelines to wash their hands thoroughly and regularly with soap and hot water. Our public toilets will be open to support regular handwashing.

Hand sanitiser stations will be available on arrival.

Yes, our public toilets will be open with an enhanced cleaning regime.

Only visitors to Mills Observatory will be able to use our toilets.

Yes, current Scottish Government guidance requires face coverings to be worn during your visit.

Our staff will wear face coverings.

Note that within the Scottish Government guidance not all individuals are required to wear masks or face coverings. Please let our staff know if you are in this group. Please be courteous of those who may have valid health reasons for not wearing a face covering.

Planetarium shows

1-2pm and 2:30 -3:30pm.
April 9th, June 4th and August 6th

Take a tour of the night sky and learn about summer constellations and what to look out for in the night skies, galaxies and the latest space news. Suitable for adults and children aged 6yrs and over.

£1 adults, 50p children. Booking essential on (01382) 435967.

The bodies of the telescopes are wiped down with anti-bacterial wipes/spray after every use, while the eye pieces are wiped with specialist lens wipes to ensure they are sanitised after each use.

Mills Observatory

Britain’s first purpose-built public observatory enjoys a magnificent woodland setting on the summit of Balgay Hill. Watch stars and planets through our telescopes, or admire the scenery with some spectacular treetop vistas across the silvery Tay.

With fascinating space exploration and astronomical displays, planetarium shows and a fully computerised telescope that can detect 30,000 objects in the sky, there’s so much to see, do and learn!
