West Dock Street, Dundee

West Dock Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0139

Dundee's West Dock Street led southwards from Dock Street into the harbour and docks area down the western side of Earl Grey Docks.

Alexander Spence, the grain, hay and straw merchant had stores at Nos. 19 and 31 West Dock Street and a retail outlet at Nos. 7-8 Dock Street (also listed as No. 1 Yeaman Shore). Clark & Sinclair, wholesale fruit merchants, were based at Nos. 9 and 11.

At the end of the road is the Tay Hotel, built to plans by Robert Hunter in 1898 - taking 'much of its personality from William Mackison's Whitehall Crescent' according to Charles McKean and David Walker's 'Dundee: and illustrated architectural guide'.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
