Unidentified ship in Dundee Harbour

Unidentified ship in Dundee Harbour - Ref: WC0932

Alexander Wilson was the manager of a calender, a factory in which jute, which had previously been processed, was given its final treatment. In his free time, he was active as a photographer.

This image, which is undated, shows a three masted ship, berthed in front of the distinctive clock tower warehouse, which remains one of the features of the old part of the harbour. The western part was transformed into a retail development in 2000.

The vessel is a three masted sailing ship, which is probably being cleaned and re-painted after a long voyage from either Chittagong or Calcutta with a cargo fo jute of the city's factories.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
