Strawberry Bank, Dundee

Strawberry Bank, Dundee - Ref: WC0613

Strawberrybank in Dundee is a small street running from Perth Road in the north to Magdalen Yard Road in the south. This Alexander Wilson photograph matches Ordnance Survey map 54.9.6 in showing the layout of No. 14.

It has not been possible to confirm the accuracy of the note on the reverse of the photograph to the effect that Rev. Robert Murray McCheyne, a prominent mid-19th-century clergy who died tragically young, used to live there.

In the Dundee Directory of 1908-09, there is no listing for No. 14, while No. 16 is home to the teacher, David Dawson. He is still listed in 1909-10, and No. 14 is occupied once more, by Mrs W. D. Drummond.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
