St Andrew's Church, Dundee

St Andrew's Church, Dundee - Ref: WC1445

Situated in King Street, Cowgate, St Andrew's Church was built in 1772 by architect Samuel bell. The church was financed by the Kirk Session, the Nine Incorporated Trades and the Three United Trades.

At the time the area was semi rural. Later over development around the church meant it lost its popularity with the upper classes. Today, the church remains one of Dundee's few remaining 18th century buildings.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
