Springfield, Dundee - Ref: WC0609

The east side of Dundee's Springfield, a series of 'Regency terraced houses' which runs northwards from Perth Road, is seen in this Alexander Wilson photograph.

Nothing is known of the architect other than the fact that he was from Edinburgh. Residents around the turn of the century included several members of the United Presbyterian Church's clergy, teachers and businessmen.

Mrs Mary Souter, the Nethergate clothes designer and outfitter, lived at No. 9 for over 20 years. Journalist Carlaw T. Martin lived at No. 23 until he was appointed director of the Museum of Science and Arts in Edinburgh in 1910.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
