Seagate, Dundee

Seagate, Dundee - Ref: WC0596

This photograph shows the north side of the Seagate in Dundee, looking eastwards slightly east of Sugarhouse Wynd, leading away from the city centre.

The furniture dealer Joseph Jeffrey is listed at No. 146 in the Dundee Directory for 1892-93 [as well as editions before and after this date] as Joseph Jaffrey, who lived at No. 108 Seagate.

Just beyond is the junction with Queen Street, the first building being No. 154, home of James R. Benvie, the aerated water manufacturer. He lived at No. 154 Albert Street.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
