Panmure Street, Dundee

Panmure Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0524

This photograph actually shows Dundee's Panmure Street leading westwards to the right (towards Meadowside) and the Murraygate leading off to the west (towards the High Street).

George Henry Rowbottom, clothier and general outfitter, is listed in Dundee Directories ate Nos. 33 and 35 Panmure Street only after 1892-93. The sign referring to 'extension and reconstruction of premises' therefore helps to date the image.

His shop was previously only No. 150 Murraygate. Rowbottom lived at Rowanbank in Wormit. The wines & spirits merchant at No. 144 Murraygate was A. Petrie. By 1895, the business was run by Mrs James Petrie.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
